Pidi kozhukattai

Happy Vinayagar Chathurthi to all my blog visitors. My favorite god is vinayagar / Ganesha and I can say vinayagar chathurthi is the most special day in the year to me. I like to make kozhukattai and sundal on that day. Now I am presenting you pidi kozhukattai which is very soft in texture and awesome in taste.

Pidi kozhukattai

Ingredients:

      • 1 cup – Idly rice
      • 1 no – Onion (finely chopped)
      • 1 or 2 nos – Green chilli (chopped finely)
      • 2 tbsp – Coconut grated
      • Salt as needed

Seasonings:

      • 1 tbsp – Sesame oil
      • 1/4 tsp – Mustard seeds
      • 1/4 tsp – Split black gram
      • 1/4 tsp – Cumin seeds
      • 3 or 4 nos – Curry leaves (chopped finely)
      • 1 pinch – Asafoetida

Preparation method:

  1. Wash and soak rice for 3 to 4 hrs. Then grind them in a mixer grinder to a smooth batter and add required salt, keep it aside.
  2. Heat oil in a pan, season with items given for seasoning. Add onion and green chillies, saute until slightly golden brown.
  3. Add 1/4 cup water and bring it to boil over low flame. Then slowly add rice flour batter little by little while stirring it continuously.
  4. Now add coconut grated and keep stirring to avoid forming lumps. Once the rice gets cooked and water is absorbed fully, the rice mixture will become thick like a ball, switch off the stove.
  5. Let it cool for a while. When the mixture is still warm, take a lemon sized mixture and roll them into a cylindrical dumpling with your hands as shown in the picture. Repeat the same till the mixture gets done. Steam the dumplings for at least 10 mins.
  6. Now pidi kozhukattai is ready. Serve hot and enjoy.

Notes:

  • Always keep the flame in low or medium while making rice flour mixture. It takes 10-15 mins but it is worthy doing it.
  • Make kozhukattai when its still warm. Do not let it open for a long time which will cause the mixture to get dry and ending up in hard kozhukattai. Try to cover with wet clothe until you prepare.
